New year, new blog template and other changes…

January 6th, 2010

I started blogging over 2.5 years ago, so now it’s (finally) time to use a blog template which sucks less than my original one!

I spent quite a lot of time searching for the perfect template and oh, didn’t find any. All templates had some shortcomings and majority of the more advanced ones were geared towards people publishing news about their pets (or socks for that matter :)

I had been a (secret) admirer or Greg Rahn’s blog template for a while and he agreed to share his config with me, so that saved me a few days setting up and tweaking the right template! Remind me to buy lots of beer to Greg if you see us in the same room together and (still) apparently being sober.

I will be tweaking my blog template further over the days and some day I may even replace the lame-looking header image in my blog.

Also, I will be making more changes about my blog. Many people have told me (and I agree) that the blog format is not the best for organizing “persistent” knowledge, knowledge bases and guides. The blog entries tend to “age out” over time and the structure of things gets lost.

So, I will be announcing a new website soon ( I mean very soon ) where I organize my tuning/troubleshooting guides, Oracle performance reference, scripts and some useful apps. So all of the practical and useful stuff will go there. Stay tuned…

What kind of stuff shall I leave into this blog? Here I will post any random ideas I have. Not just about Oracle, although Oracle related stuff will dominate this blog as long as I keep working with Oracle issues every day…

So, this blog will become more of a personal-type blog, where I’ll post cute pictures of dogs and cats (nah, just joking, I’ll post cute screenshots of statspack and AWR reports instead).

In this blog, there will be:

  1. More non-technical content
  2. The remaining technical content will be more hard-core, probably less useful, but likely more interesting for Oracle internals maniacs among us
  3. More opinions about IT (and (work) life in general)
  4. Due bullet number 3. there will inevitably be more coarse language (so if any of your under-eighteen kids tend to read my blog for some weird reason, then it’s time to block my site).

We’ll have a cool new year!

Looks better but it made me feel alone with the “sucking” template :) which is the best one for code formatting without any scrollbar needs.

I also think your stuff needs a dedicated better organized simple website.

Good luck with new year and new web site and new researches.

    Hi Tanel,

Good luck for the website…and a very happy new year !

BTW did you try the theme used by Jonathan on his blog ? Its pretty nice for posting text and code as it provide the full width for content.

    Cheers !

WOW…what a change….looks great. I was waiting for this, as you had already announced in the past that you were working on it. So I guess your system is live and in production now….LOL.
